This lesson in giving gifts with an extra flair comes to you courtesy of the ancient Japanese technique of wrapping packages in furoshiki or cloth, via photo stylist Mickie Clark. On set for this issue’s Finds shoot, she demonstrated the art by using silk scarves to wrap these lovely packages. Such a wonderful holiday idea to steal! Cloth, carefully tied, was the preferred way to wrap and carry packages in Japan until the advent of the plastic shopping bag; today’s environmental conscientiousness is spurring a renaissance. Clark says she often uses scarves in lieu of paper to wrap packages for family and friends. It’s an eco-friendly and elegant way to give two gifts in one, and allows her to personalize a package with a wrap she selects because it will hold special appeal for the recipient.
